Adelphia Powerlink Accessibility in 2001

Londonderry, NH

Last Updated: 01/31/01

This page is to document accessibility of Adelphia’s one-way Powerlink service from my town of Londonderry, NH. I’ve found the ‘network status page’ to be of little or no assistance in telling me when the system is up or down. I find that commonly, Adelphia will say that ‘isolated customers’ may be having problems just to cover their butts, but this is only on occasion…For example it is impossible to connect to the service as I write this but the only outage shown for my area is a news server issue. I know at this point not to bother calling or emailing them to get the scoop, it’s just futility. These are just MY observations, no guarantee of accuracy or completeness is given. I just figured that since I’ve started keeping track of just how often this service doesn’t work, I’d share my results. In no way am I saying that you shouldn’t buy Powerlink service. That’s up to you. I only started keeping track at January 10th outage  but hope to update this page a few times a month (with the track record they’ve had, it will be several outages per month). Being able to access the system every day for a week is rather uncommon and is always a nice surprise for me. I’ll document those too! As it stands, not a single whole week has passed without an outage in 2001.

SATUS: 18 out of 35 days have had outages this year

OUTAGE

(2 outages that I didn’t document…~1 day each..DHCP/authorization issues)

January 10 through January 16: Number to dial states ‘number has changed or been disconnected’

January 24 through 31: DHCP address assignment doesn’t work, sometimes the system will not even validate password. Consistant ‘Offer receive errors’

February 4th: DHCP address assignment doesn’t work….again. Offer receive errors….again.

*Special Note- On the morning of 01/28 I spoke to Adelphia’s ‘We Care’ department. The lady I spoke to sounded like she actually cared about the service being down! Now I was getting somewhere! NOT…She was very nice and promised to call me back after she called the local engineers (apparently in Burlington, VT) to get the scoop because I was the second call that morning about the issue. Well It’s 01/30 @ 7pm and I haven’t heard from a soul at Adelphia.

*Special Note 2- Today, 01/30 I called back to the corporate office asking for the ‘We Care’ department again. I was connected to billing (hey why not..’We Care’ / billing they kinda sound alike). I have to say I was incredibly stupid in not taking down the name of the lady I spoke to in the ‘We Care’ department on the 28th and of course when the billing lady called the ‘We Care’ department they said they had no idea who I was. Sigh. Anyway the billing lady got me in touch with an engineer in their Cloudersport HQ and for the first time in my dealings with Adelphia, I got to speak to someone that actually was qualified for their job. This gentleman went through all of the troubleshooting he could, and I felt comfortable with his skillset but unfortunately we couldn’t resolve the problem. He eventually called the Londonderry office and spoke to Joyce (sp?(who I had left a vmail for on a previous problem and never heard back from)) and she scheduled one of the local engineers to come out on Monday, Feb 5th between 12 and 2pm. Sigh again. I just hope this guy is a little better than the one that came out to install the modem in the first place (he couldn’t even get it to work…I had to do it myself.) I’m gonna make a prediction here that the problem mysteriously fixes itself like it always does before the engineer arrives on Monday. We’ll see if I’m wrong! J

*02/04/01

Well sure enough the cable modem mysteriously fixed itself as always on Thursday  01/31! Go figure. It’s Sunday Feb 4th and its back down again. Such is life I guess. Hey I got 3 full days of it working ---IN A ROW!---. Man I’m getting spoiled now.  Same DHCP problem again tonight. It did work this AM though.

-BTW- I’m using Fortunecity to host this instead of my free page at Adelphia because even though I signed up for the Adelphia webpage over a week ago, I still haven’t heard a word about it. I was up and running at Fortunecity in 5 minutes. THE SAGA CONTINUES!
